Back Ups: Saving Your Assets. By Steven Going

Products to consider

Software

If you are managing an Apple only network, I highly recommend Dantz Retrospect software http://www.dantz.com. Although Dantz has had an IBM compatible client available for some time, they have also recently ported other products to the IBM compatible platform. Having said that, you might consider this application regardless of your platform(s). Keep in mind that your server or desktop, whether SGI-IRIX, Linux, Novell, NT or otherwise, can be backed up with an Apple if the server is running apple file services or your backup software has a client for that operating system.

I still keep the backups of PC and Mac data separate due to my situation, but if I had, for instance, 30 Apple computers, a server (apple or otherwise) containing a few hundred gigabytes of data and a few PCs or even an NT server, I might back it all up with Dantz software.

Veritas is also a top-notch Backup company that has an Apple client although the Backup application itself will need to be loaded on the Windows Operating System. Their Product is Backup Exec. More info is available at http://www.veritas.com/us/products/

This is my current favorite for the PC side. Mainly due to the types of servers I have to deal with. Backup Exec is as easy to use as Dantz Retrospect. Veritas, in my opinion, has a wider variety of services to offer.

Although there are many other products available, these happen to be my tried and true favorites for Apple, SGI, Novell and NT backup and recovery.
